Maritan is a tiny magical princess and drill instructor associated with the fictional kingdom of Paris Island and a parody version of U.S. Marine culture. Through exaggerated training sessions, military jargon, absurd discipline and intentionally offensive English phrases, she bullies and instructs Army-tan under the watch of Navy-tan and other military-themed moe characters. The Focus/Intensive Drill books combine short manga material with English-learning exercises and audio components, turning military slang and profanity into a deliberately outrageous language-study parody.
